Monroe County, Florida

Helping seriously injured victims of all types of accidents throughout Monroe County.

Monroe County, which consists primarily of the Florida Keys, has a relatively small population of 74,000. Named after President James Monroe, Monroe County was founded in 1823. Home to some of the world’s best known fishing and scuba diving, particularly in John Pennekamp Park; Monroe County’s most well-known city is Key West, sometimes referred to as the Conch Republic. The islands, called Keys, that make up the majority of Monroe County include Key West, Marathon, Key Colony Beach, Layton, Islamorada, Cudjoe Key, Big Pine Key, Duck Key-which is home to Hawks Cay, Tavernier, Key Largo, Flamingo, Bay Pint and Sugarloaf Shores.

There are approximately 1400 car accidents each year in Monroe County, which unfortunately result in an annual average of 20 wrongful deaths. The majority of the deadly crashes happen along US1, or what is known as the Overseas Highway. Due to limited lanes, no guardrails and vehicles entering the road for adjacent businesses, too often drivers, many of which are drunk or distracted, swerve into oncoming traffic causing deadly head-on collisions.

The personal injury cases arising from those car accidents, and every other type of accident in Monroe County, including boating or watersports crashes and slip and fall incidents, are resolved within the courtrooms at the Monroe County Courthouses, identified as Florida’s 16th Judicial Circuit. Given the large geographic distance between the cities within Monroe County, those courthouses are located in three separate locations: 302 Fleming Street, Key West, 3117 Overseas Highway, Marathon and 88820 Overseas Highway, Tavernier.
